Miley Cyrus' 'LOL': What Went Wrong?
A movie expert weighs in on why the teen dramedy was a box-office flop.

<P>Last Friday, Miley Cyrus' soapy teen dramedy <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/493415/moviemain.jhtml">"LOL"</a> opened to a limited release in nine states. The film, by all accounts, didn't perform the way a film starring Cyrus, "Twilight" star Ashley Greene and one-time screen siren Demi Moore, might be expected to.</P><P>"LOL," an English-language adaptation of a French Film of the same name, <a href="http://moviecitynews.com/2012/05/the-weekend-report-may-6-2012/lk-2012-05-06/" target="_blank">grossed only $46,500</a> in 105 theaters. While it's hard to tell why the film underperformed, it seems that a lack of marketing leading up to its debut may have played a role in that. The flick follows the story of a teen, Lola (played by Cyrus), as she faces the strife of first love in a world driven by technology.</P><P><iframe width="460" height="264" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4P6mXZzY9nc?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></P><P>"It's really hard to say because we've heard absolutely nothing about it. I think there was some buzz about this was sort of going to be a different type of breakout role for Miley. I'm not a fan of Miley, but I would actually like to see that and I think a lot of people would," Brooke Tarnoff, a senior editor at Next Movie, told MTV News about the lackluster interest in the flick once it dropped.</P><P>With so few eyes on the release leading up to May 4, it's hard to tell if the performance had anything to do with Cyrus. Tarnoff added, "Maybe the selling power of Miley has diminished. I think her fanbase may be less loyal than it was in the 'Hannah Montana' days, but it's all kind of moot."</P><P>The film had gotten some attention when Cyrus and Greene were <a href="/news/articles/1647275/miley-cyrus-ashley-greene-shoot-lol-paris.jhtml">spotted filming it back in 2010</a>. But, after shooting wrapped, little else was heard about the film until a <a href="/news/articles/1682916/miley-cyrus-lol-trailer.jhtml">trailer</a> dropped in mid-April, three weeks before the limited release.</P><P>"There's obviously an audience for pretty much anything," she continued. "And this one having a 'Twilight' star and Miley Cyrus, who still has some cache, it's just [a missed opportunity]."</P><P>Regardless of the film's box-office performance, Cyrus seemed proud of it. She took to <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MileyCyrus/status/199543471130943488" target="_blank">Twitter</a> over the weekend and brushed off the low numbers. "Thank u so much for everyone who went to see LOL," she wrote. "It is a film I loved making and I am proud of.... <P>It seems that everyone has the fever these days. That fever is for the steamy erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey." And there are two more Hollywood A-listers who are potentially getting all hot and bothered.</P><P>Well, one of them is, at least.</P><P>Angelina Jolie had been rumored to be in the running to direct the big-screen adaptation of the E.L. James novel. <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/fifty-shades-of-grey-heating-up-with-angelina-jolie-talk/" target="_blank">Deadline</a> reported that the film's studio had had a "conversation or two" with the actress about possibly helming the sexy film franchise. The trilogy follows the S&M relationship between shy college coed Ana Steele and her domineering billionaire beau, Christian Grey.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would Nina Dobrev Be In 'Fifty Shades'?" id="vid:768309" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>However, Jolie's rep tells <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/angelina-jolie-direct-fifty-shades-grey-332449" target="_blank"><i>The Hollywood Reporter</i></a> that there haven't been any talks with the studio, Universal Pictures' Focus Features, about her coming on board to direct.</P><P>Well, with the studio on the lookout for not only a director but also a leading lady, they might want to call up the <a href="/news/articles/1686727/miley-cyrus-liam-hemsworth-engaged-timeline.jhtml">newly engaged Miley Cyrus</a>. One day after announcing her impending nuptials to "Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth, she <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mileycyrus" target="_blank">tweeted</a>, "Reading 50 shades of grey next to the oldest dude ever. #awkward."</P><P>Even if Cyrus doesn't get the part of Ana, she is working on her own sexy project. The singer is currently hard at work on her <a href="/news/articles/1686813/miley-cyrus-sexy-album-liam-hemsworth.jhtml">next studio album</a>, which sources say will be "very adult and sexy." The insiders add that Miley's music is reflecting her personal life, as she plans her wedding and approaches her big twentieth birthday later this year. The insider continues, "We are watching a young girl turn into a young woman."</P><P>But back to "Fifty Shades." Bieber's Believe enters charts just one week after his mentor's Looking 4 Myself, as Usher tells MTV News, 'We support each other.'

<P>For the past several years, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> has been helping his protégé <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> become an international pop star. The pair have <a href="/news/articles/1673032/justin-bieber-usher-christmas-song.jhtml">collaborated on songs</a> and onstage, but now they are about to have their first battle — on the charts.</P><P>Usher's album, <a href="/news/articles/1686990/usher-looking-4-myself-evolution.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself</i></a>, debuted on top of the <a href="/news/articles/1687847/usher-billboard-looking-4-myself.jhtml"><i>Billboard</i> albums chart</a>, becoming his fourth #1 album after selling 128,000 copies in its first week. But now it's Bieber's turn: Just one week later, Bieber will be entering the charts with his third studio album, <a href="/news/articles/1685471/justin-bieber-believe-track-list.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a> and <a href="/news/articles/1687988/justin-bieber-believe-album-sales.jhtml">early predictions</a> are expecting huge album sales.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Do Usher And Justin Bieber Have a Friendly Competition For Record Sales?" id="vid:789781.id:1686957" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>According to <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/news/justin-bieber-kenny-chesney-headed-for-top-1007386952.story?utm_source=most_recent" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a>, <i>Believe</i> is on course to sell between 410,000 and 440,000 units, which would make it the year's biggest debut to date.</P><P>Even though Bieber is on track to beat his mentor in sales, the R&B superstar isn't concerned.</P><P>Regarding whether he and Bieber speak about topping each other on the charts, Usher told MTV News, "Actually, we have not had that conversation. We try to calculate when we release so that we support each other. It's like a seesaw: 'You take it this week; I'll take it this week.' "</P><P>Usher also said that even though he and Bieber do not appear on each other's albums, he was still heavily involved in each song that made the cut on <i>Believe</i>.</P><P>"We talked about many different things when making his album. The coolest part about it is we support each other regardless if I'm on the album or he's on my album or not," Usher said. "Every album, it is that sit-down that we have to have, to go through this record. We talk about the audiences that are there: This song is for this audience member, this song is for this region. Billboard Music Awards Belong To Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift

<P>Sunday night's (May 20) <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards were a bittersweet affair, balancing the promise of decades of entertainment from a new generation of record-smashing young artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift with fond memories of a number of recently departed musical icons.</P><P>In a three-hour show heavy on performances, chart staples <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lmfao/artist.jhtml">LMFAO</a> helped kicked the show off with a typically hyped performance of their inescapable party anthems that featured a cabbage-patching teddy bear and zebra and more animal prints than a Flintstones family reunion.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="2012 Billboard Awards Highlights" id="id:1685461" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was the night's first winner, taking the Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence. The singer swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said, "I just want to say how much of a blessing it's been ... the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody. ... I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position."</P><P>Co-host Julie Bowen took a moment out of the program early on to pay tribute to late Bee Gees member <a href="/news/articles/1685459/robin-gibb-bee-gees-charts.jhtml">Robin Gibb</a>, who died earlier in the day Sunday after a long battle with cancer. The night also featured a <a href="/news/articles/1685464/whitney-houston-adam-yauch-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">touching tribute</a> to recently passed disco queen <a href="/news/articles/1685299/donna-summer-dead.jhtml">Donna Summer</a> by Natasha Bedingfield and a segment devoted to <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">music legend Whitney Houston</a> with a medley of her indelible hits performed by John Legend and Jordin Sparks.</P><P>Daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the <i>Billboard</i> Millennium Award on behalf of her late mother. "I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all," she said. "Not just when it was good, but when it was bad too ... thank you <I>so</I> much for showing that much love, because she deserved it."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a> was handed the Spotlight Award for tying the record set by Michael Jackson of five #1 hits from the same album, for her handful of smashes from <I>Teenage Dream.</I> Dressed in a floor-length sparkling silver gown, her hair a muted dark purple, Perry said she was "incredibly honored" to be in the same category as someone like Jackson.</P><P>"Most of all, of course, I always say that the people have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering, gorgeous community of fans out there," she added to wild applause, while finding a spare few seconds to plug her upcoming <a href="/news/articles/1685370/katy-perry-part-of-me-movie-poster.jhtml">3-D concert film, "Part of Me."</a> Oh, and she said she couldn't wait to do shots later that night with her 91-year-old granny, who was in the audience.</P><P>The ladies had a great night, as <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> was honored with the <i>Billboard</i> Woman of the Year award, acknowledging her stadium full of impressive credits, including a place as the only woman in music history to score three #1 albums in a row, each of which has sold more than 5 million copies. Swift, 22, dressed in a flowing red evening gown and ever gracious, thanked her legions of fans, saying, "I just love you so much, I'm just so humbled and honored by this."</P><P>As Miley Cyrus noted, you're only new to the game once, so it was fitting that red-hot rapper <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wiz_khalifa/artist.jhtml">Wiz Khalifa</a> best the competition for the Top New Artist trophy. "I'm up here shakin', man," the rapper admitted as he thanked his whole crew and label family, as well as his "beautiful fiancée," <a href="/news/articles/1680245/wiz-khalifa-amber-rose-engaged.jhtml">Amber Rose</a>. "She's my world and she puts up with my crazy butt, too," he smiled, as Rose beamed from her seat in the audience.</P><P>Some other men got a bit of attention as well, with an absent Lil Wayne beating out Chris Brown, Drake, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber for Male Artist of the Year.</P><P>Hot 100 Song of the Year was a tight race featuring smashes from Adele, Perry, Maroon 5 and Pitbull. But could it have gone to anyone but LMFAO for "Party Rock Anthem"? With six weeks atop the Hot 100, the uncle/nephew duo scored the third longest-running top 10 hit of all time. "This is a dream come true," said singer Redfoo. A short time later, Khalifa shouted out the <a href="/news/articles/1684552/adam-yauch-mca-remember-tribute-beastie-boys-dead.jhtml">Beastie Boys' MCA</a> before LMFAO were up on the stage again for the Top Duo or Group prize.</P><P>Brown got his chance a bit later with a win in the R&B Artist of the Year category, Foster the People took Top Rock Song for "Pumped Up Kicks," Coldplay were named Top Rock Artist, U2 Top Touring Act, Lady Gaga Top Dance Artist and an Icon Award for Stevie Wonder. Brown rode his glowing BMX bike out for a high-energy lip-synched run through "Turn Up the Music," while Usher got all gothic and mysterious with a flashy, Las Vegas-worthy, high-concept staging of "Scream."</P><P>Bieber stalked the DayGlo stage for a clown- and geisha-assisted future-funk performance of <a href="/news/articles/1685460/justin-bieber-boyfriend-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">"Boyfriend,"</a> followed by his protégé Carly Rae Jepsen singing "Call Me Maybe" and Carrie Underwood standing her ground amid a sea of blowing fans during "Blown Away."</P><P>In addition, the performance-heavy show had Linkin Park cranking up the flames for "Burn It Down," Nelly Furtado sporting "Big Hoops," Alicia Keys jamming with Icon winner Wonder, Perry doing a high-wire act in the virtual clouds during "Wide Awake" and Cee Lo Green and Goodie Mob joined by a one-legged Cirque du Soleil break dancer on "Fight to Win" and a stage full of dancing kids for a cover of the Beasties' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" in another nod to MCA.</P><P><i>What was your favorite part of the </i>Billboard<i> Music Awards? Taylor Swift's Label Inks Groundbreaking Deal With Clear Channel
Artists on Big Machine Records will now receive payment every time their songs are played on Clear Channel radio stations.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> is in a brand-new relationship. No, she isn't dating some hot Hollywood star. Instead, Swift's label, Big Machine Records, has just inked a deal with Clear Channel that will allow artists on the label to get paid for songs played on their radio stations.</P><P>The label, as well as the performers on it — including heavy hitters like Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Reba McEntire — will share the revenue with Clear Channel. Before this deal, the label and its performers did not collect royalties when their songs were played on terrestrial radio; only songwriters and publishers did.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Taylor Swift Learning With New Album" id="vid:733489.id:1678910" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Internet radio stations, however, already do pay performers and labels when their songs are played. Under the new deal, Clear Channel will be able to limit payments for songs streamed online, which will enable the growth of digital radio.</P><P>"Not only does this partnership enable Big Machine to participate in terrestrial broadcast revenues, but we are also helping to grow digital radio," Scott Borchetta, the label's president and CEO, said. "[It's] a great opportunity for all of us and a breakthrough opportunity for Big Machine artists."</P><P>But reportedly, it won't end there. <a href="http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00051202.html" target="_blank">Aceshowbiz.com</a> further reports that Clear Channel will approach more labels for similar deals and Big Machine may ink more of these with other radio conglomerates.</P><P>"Today, 98 percent of our listening is terrestrial broadcast and 2 percent digital — with record labels and artists only paid for the 2 percent," John Hogan, chairman and CEO of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, added in a statement about the landmark deal. "This new agreement expands label and artist participation from just digital to terrestrial broadcast radio revenue in one comprehensive framework that will give all of us a great incentive to drive the growth of the digital radio industry and allow everyone to participate financially in its growth."</P><P>This coup for Swift comes just months after she was named the top earner of 2012 by <i>Billboard</i> magazine on their <a href="/news/articles/1680861/taylor-swift-lady-gaga-billboard-money-makers.jhtml">"Music's Top 40 Money Makers" list</a>. Swift sits at #1 thanks to reported earnings of $35.7 million in the 2011 calendar year. She ranks so high due to quadruple-platinum-plus sales of <i>Speak Now</i> and its accompanying tour, which grossed $88.5 million in the U.S. alone.</P><P>But she's hardly resting on her laurels. She is currently hard at work on her <a href="/news/articles/1679271/taylor-swift-safe-and-sound.jhtml">follow-up to the release</a>. <P>Sunday night's (May 20) <i>Billboard</i> Music Awards were a bittersweet affair, balancing the promise of decades of entertainment from a new generation of record-smashing young artists like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift with fond memories of a number of recently departed musical icons.</P><P>In a three-hour show heavy on performances, chart staples <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lmfao/artist.jhtml">LMFAO</a> helped kicked the show off with a typically hyped performance of their inescapable party anthems that featured a cabbage-patching teddy bear and zebra and more animal prints than a Flintstones family reunion.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="2012 Billboard Awards Highlights" id="id:1685461" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> was the night's first winner, taking the Top Social Artist award for his huge online presence. The singer swaggered up to the stage and, in an uncharacteristically emotional moment, said, "I just want to say how much of a blessing it's been ... the past three or four years, growing up in front of everybody. ... I want to thank all my fans, because the Internet is where I got my start, and all my fans have helped me get to this position."</P><P>Co-host Julie Bowen took a moment out of the program early on to pay tribute to late Bee Gees member <a href="/news/articles/1685459/robin-gibb-bee-gees-charts.jhtml">Robin Gibb</a>, who died earlier in the day Sunday after a long battle with cancer. The night also featured a <a href="/news/articles/1685464/whitney-houston-adam-yauch-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">touching tribute</a> to recently passed disco queen <a href="/news/articles/1685299/donna-summer-dead.jhtml">Donna Summer</a> by Natasha Bedingfield and a segment devoted to <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">music legend Whitney Houston</a> with a medley of her indelible hits performed by John Legend and Jordin Sparks.</P><P>Daughter Bobbi Kristina accepted the <i>Billboard</i> Millennium Award on behalf of her late mother. "I just really want to say thank you to everyone who supported us through it all," she said. "Not just when it was good, but when it was bad too ... thank you <I>so</I> much for showing that much love, because she deserved it."</P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/perry_katy/artist.jhtml">Katy Perry</a> was handed the Spotlight Award for tying the record set by Michael Jackson of five #1 hits from the same album, for her handful of smashes from <I>Teenage Dream.</I> Dressed in a floor-length sparkling silver gown, her hair a muted dark purple, Perry said she was "incredibly honored" to be in the same category as someone like Jackson.</P><P>"Most of all, of course, I always say that the people have the power, so I want to say thank you to the glittering, gorgeous community of fans out there," she added to wild applause, while finding a spare few seconds to plug her upcoming <a href="/news/articles/1685370/katy-perry-part-of-me-movie-poster.jhtml">3-D concert film, "Part of Me."</a> Oh, and she said she couldn't wait to do shots later that night with her 91-year-old granny, who was in the audience.</P><P>The ladies had a great night, as <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> was honored with the <i>Billboard</i> Woman of the Year award, acknowledging her stadium full of impressive credits, including a place as the only woman in music history to score three #1 albums in a row, each of which has sold more than 5 million copies. Swift, 22, dressed in a flowing red evening gown and ever gracious, thanked her legions of fans, saying, "I just love you so much, I'm just so humbled and honored by this."</P><P>As Miley Cyrus noted, you're only new to the game once, so it was fitting that red-hot rapper <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wiz_khalifa/artist.jhtml">Wiz Khalifa</a> best the competition for the Top New Artist trophy. "I'm up here shakin', man," the rapper admitted as he thanked his whole crew and label family, as well as his "beautiful fiancée," <a href="/news/articles/1680245/wiz-khalifa-amber-rose-engaged.jhtml">Amber Rose</a>. "She's my world and she puts up with my crazy butt, too," he smiled, as Rose beamed from her seat in the audience.</P><P>Some other men got a bit of attention as well, with an absent Lil Wayne beating out Chris Brown, Drake, Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber for Male Artist of the Year.</P><P>Hot 100 Song of the Year was a tight race featuring smashes from Adele, Perry, Maroon 5 and Pitbull. But could it have gone to anyone but LMFAO for "Party Rock Anthem"? With six weeks atop the Hot 100, the uncle/nephew duo scored the third longest-running top 10 hit of all time. "This is a dream come true," said singer Redfoo. A short time later, Khalifa shouted out the <a href="/news/articles/1684552/adam-yauch-mca-remember-tribute-beastie-boys-dead.jhtml">Beastie Boys' MCA</a> before LMFAO were up on the stage again for the Top Duo or Group prize.</P><P>Brown got his chance a bit later with a win in the R&B Artist of the Year category, Foster the People took Top Rock Song for "Pumped Up Kicks," Coldplay were named Top Rock Artist, U2 Top Touring Act, Lady Gaga Top Dance Artist and an Icon Award for Stevie Wonder. Brown rode his glowing BMX bike out for a high-energy lip-synched run through "Turn Up the Music," while Usher got all gothic and mysterious with a flashy, Las Vegas-worthy, high-concept staging of "Scream."</P><P>Bieber stalked the DayGlo stage for a clown- and geisha-assisted future-funk performance of <a href="/news/articles/1685460/justin-bieber-boyfriend-billboard-music-awards.jhtml">"Boyfriend,"</a> followed by his protégé Carly Rae Jepsen singing "Call Me Maybe" and Carrie Underwood standing her ground amid a sea of blowing fans during "Blown Away."</P><P>In addition, the performance-heavy show had Linkin Park cranking up the flames for "Burn It Down," Nelly Furtado sporting "Big Hoops," Alicia Keys jamming with Icon winner Wonder, Perry doing a high-wire act in the virtual clouds during "Wide Awake" and Cee Lo Green and Goodie Mob joined by a one-legged Cirque du Soleil break dancer on "Fight to Win" and a stage full of dancing kids for a cover of the Beasties' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" in another nod to MCA.</P><P><i>What was your favorite part of the </i>Billboard<i> Music Awards?
